August is New Hampshire Eat Local Month, a statewide celebration of farmers and local food producers. And it’s a perfect time to eat more locally-produced foods in in Monadnock Region’s restaurants and inns. Especially now that Monadnock Menus — the area’s local food delivery service — has expanded its delivery routes.
This summer, in time for NH Eat Local Month, Monadnock Menus added a new delivery route, and an extra delivery day, to its once-a-week route. Monadnock Menus offers wholesale buyers (such as restaurants and institutions) items from 35 farmers and food producers in Cheshire and Windham counties. Monadnock Menus’ 40+ customers include local restaurants, inns, nursing homes, schools, a low-income buyers club, a correctional facility and grocery stores. Monadnock Menus now delivers Wednesday and Friday and has added points south of Keene and Peterborough to include Jaffrey, Rindge, Fitzwilliam, Troy, Richmond, Winchester and Swanzey.
Since offering a wider distribution route, Monadnock Menus (which expects more than $150,000 in sales by the end of 2016) has already added several new customers to the route, including the Waterhouse Restaurant and Bantam Grill in Peterborough, Fitzwilliam Inn in Fitzwilliam, and the Inn at East Hill Farm in Troy.
The hope is that in adding more restaurants and inns to Monadnock Menus’ customer base, that more people will eat more local food — a boon for area farmers and producers — and a plus for people who want to eat fresher and healthier food.
