It can be hard to stop using tobacco cold turkey. So in preparation for the Great American Smokeout on November 17, there will be “Butt Stops” set up throughout the Monadnock Region the day before, Wednesday, November 16, 2016. The stops are designed to help ease the discomfort of going without tobacco on November 17.
The Cheshire Coalition for Tobacco-free Communities (CCTFC) is hosting the all-day event, which will have designated “Butt Stops” throughout the region. Each stop will be staffed by trained tobacco cessation volunteers.
Those who visit a “Butt Stop” will get a week’s worth of free nicotine patches or gum; the “stops” will also offer brief counseling and a referral to get tobacco cessation help, and a “comfort kit.”
This is the first time the Coalition has hosted such an event, which it hopes will be an annual occurrence; in the past, the organization has hosted a “Butt Swap” day at the Cheshire Medical Center/Dartmouth Hitchcock-Keene that swapped out tobacco products for a week’s worth of nicotine patches. The organization hopes to reach more people by bringing its message out into various communities in the region.
This is a chance to practice quitting. After all it can save your life. Here are the sobering stats:
In New Hampshire, 1900 people die every year from tobacco related illness. According to the most recent Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, 18.6 percent of Cheshire County adults use tobacco. The Healthy Monadnock goal is to reduce this rate to 12 percent by 2020. Similarly, the Youth Risk Behavior Survey shows that 18.1 percent of youth in the Monadnock region use tobacco. The Healthy Monadnock goal is to reduce youth tobacco use to 10% by the year 2020.
