Welcome to week 1 of Healthy Monadnock’s Summer Family Challenge! Each week in July and August we will post a challenge to help combat summer boredom.  Plus, we’ll provide fun & local ideas of things to do during the upcoming week and weekend!

We will communicate with blog posts, social media posts and our Family Champion newsletter (if you haven’t signed up as Family Champions yet, sign up here!).

Week One: July 7th – Walk or bike somewhere that you would usually drive!

One of the greatest parts of the summer is the ability to get outside and enjoy the sun! Take advantage of a beautiful day this week or weekend and get outside to walk or bike somewhere. Short trip or long? Let the kids decide. Pick a destination, like a pond or the movie theater, and start your journey. Use the time to talk about what is around you in your own neighborhood or town.

Don’t live close enough to walk to a destination? Drive to a location where you can park your car and then walk or bike the rest of the way.

You can also find some local trails or use the bike path to enjoy some walking and biking. Check out this list of trails in the Monadnock Region that range from less than 1 mile up to 58 miles. Try a trail you’ve never been on before or if you grew up in the area, show your kids where you used to go. There will always be great views and many trails have places for educational breaks about the history and natural environment. Take advantage of many of the local ponds and lakes to cool off and make sure to pack some sun screen and water. Plenty of places to explore and play this summer!
