Summer Challenge Week Two

Categories: Well Nourished

Week Two: July 14th – Buy some fruits, veggies and other goodies from a local farmers’ market and have a picnic at a park!

Summertime means local farmers’ markets are open, which in turn means local produce!

Never been to a farmers’ market? Now is the time to start. There are many benefits of shopping locally; some include getting a homegrown taste that you can’t find in super markets, supporting your local farmers and community, and exploring new tastes and flavors. Take advantage of what farmers of the area have to offer and hit up the farmers’ market in your town to get your fruits and vegetables.

Did you know? If you use SNAP (Food Stamps), you can receive extra benefits for fruits and vegetables at the farmers’ market! The program called Granite State Market Match matches SNAP recipients’ benefits dollar for dollar (with up to a $10 cap in most locations) for the purchase of fruits and vegetables.

Aren’t sure where the closest farmers’ market is? Check out this local list and see if your town hosts one. Or find one in a different town and discover some new farms! Want to know more benefits to support your local farmers’ market? Look at 10 Reasons to Support Farmers’ Markets

Now what? Pack up a picnic with your goodies from the farmers’ market and get to your favorite park, lay out a blanket and eat in nature! Not sure where to go? Here is a list of local parks. If you are looking for something smaller, or more local to your town, research the parks and recreation department of your town to find a list.
